SECURITY DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

IN THESE MODERN TIMES IN THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA THE END OF THE YEAR IS ALWAYS A VULNERABLE TIME. IT IS THE TIME THAT THE ZIM EXPATS RETURN HOME WITH ENOUGH MONEY TO CELEBRATE THE FESTIVE SEASON AND LEAVE ENOUGH MONEY FOR FAMILIES TO SURVIVE ANOTHER 3 TO 6 MONTHS. YOU CAN BLAME THIS ALL ON ROBERT WHO HAS DONE NOTHING FOR HIS PEOPLE. THE ONLY WAY TO TOP UP THEIR RESERVES IS TO RESORT TO CRIME. ASK ME I HAVE HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE 3 YEARS AGO FROM A TRUSTED ZIM GARDENER WHO HAD WORKED FOR ME FOR 4 YEARS .

WHAT TO DO.

BE ON THE ALERT AND ENSURE YOU DO NOT KEEP MONEY ON THE PREMISES AND MAKE IT KNOWN. I HAVE A SIGN UP OUTSIDE MY PREMISES THAT WE DO NOT ACCEPT CASH, PAYMENT ELECTRONICALLY OR BY CHEQUE ONLY.

SECURE YOUR PREMISES. MAKE SURE THAT THE PHYSICAL SECURITY IS GOOD. ELECTRIC FENCES ARE ARE OK BUT SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY A GOOD SPIKING SYSTEM SUCH AS RAZOR SPIKE SUPPLIED AND FITTED BY RAZOR SPIKE INTERNATIONAL. IF YOU CANNOT GET ONTO THE TOP OF THE WALL THEN YOU CANNOT GET OVER. ELECTRIC FENCES ARE OFTEN TOO LOW,TOO FLIMSY, BRACKETS PLACED TOO FAR APART, OR NOT WORKING DUE TO POOR MAINTENANCE. THE RATING OF THE BEST ELECTRIC FENCE IS CONSIDERABLY UPGRADED BY INSTALLING RAZOR SPIKE.

RAZOR SPIKE IS ALSO THE BEST STAND ALONE SYSTEM. THERE ARE 3 BASIC PRODUCTS, RAZOR 6, RAZOR 11 and SS BLADE TO CHOOSE FROM TO SUITE YOUR PARTICULAR APPLICATION AND BUDGET.

ANOTHER AREA OF CONCERN IS MOTOR VEHICLE PROTECTION AND VEHICLE ACCESS INTO YOUR PROPERTY. BY FITTING CARSTOP BEHIND YOUR VEHICLE OR INSIDE YOUR DRIVEWAY GATES YOU WILL ENSURE THAT YOUR CAR WILL NOT BE STOLEN AND WHILST YOU ARE AWAY ON HOLIDAY NO VEHICLE WILL HAVE ACCESS INTO YOUR PROPERTY. A SOBERING THOUGHT. WE BELIEVE THAT ALL VEHICLE OWNERS SHOULD MAKE USE OF THIS PRODUCT AS IT IS CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER THAN THE INSURANCE EXCESS SHOULD YOUR CAR BE STOLEN.

IT IS GOOD PRACTICE TO REVIEW YOUR SECURITY SYSTEMS EVERY YEAR AND UPGRADE THEM FROM TIME TO TIME. THERE IS NO TIME LIKE NOW. REMEMBER YOU CAN ALWAYS REPLACE AN ASSET BUT YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE SCARS OF A BAD INCIDENT.

HAVE A GOOD XMAS.

Home Safety Checklist

The safety of your loved ones is more important than any material possession. Please take some time to go through the following checklist so that you can be well prepared for any emergency situation. As the old saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”

Make a mental list of all the rooms in your home, and work your way through them ensuring that you´ve eliminated potential accidents, prepared emergency procedures and are ready for any eventuality.

1. Protect your perimeter as it is your first line of defense.

Make sure your perimeter of your property has Razor Spike installed on it as this is your first line of defense. If intruders can gain access to your property no alarm will save you. Stop intruders from gaining access to your wall. This will stop criminals from getting into the property to tamper with doors and alarm systems. Your second line of defense should be beams connected into your alarm system and lastly you should have a good alarm system with zones and an audible alarm which is connected to your armed response.

2. Electricity

Fuse boxes, overloaded power points and appliances in bathrooms are just a few of the possible hazards that you´ll need to look out for on your home safety checklist. Baby proofing plugs and cables is an obvious decision if you have small children, but also a great idea if you have pets.

Be sure to have any electrical faults in your home, such as faulty lights or plugs, seen to by a professional as bad wiring poses massive fire risks – thatch roof home owners – be extra cautious.

3. Make a Neighbour a Friend

If you have any friends in your street or neighbourhood that you can trust, give them a copy of your key and put their phone number on your list of emergency numbers. If you already have a neighbour looking after a spare key, it´s also a good idea to ask them to double check that your key is in a safe place.

4. Teach Your Children

Spend some time showing your children how to use the telephone and where to locate the list of emergency numbers. Explain each emergency number to them and make sure that they know the best procedure for any crisis situation.

Children can easily be misled by strangers. Allocate a “trust word” and give this word to an adult as a form of a password to let the children know that you gave them permission to trust the stranger in an emergency.

5. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit can be used for treating a grazed knee, or mean the difference between life and death. It´s fundamentally important that your household, workplace and car have a first aid kit on hand.

Make sure that your first aid kit includes the following:

Antiseptic liquid

Cotton swabs

Cotton wool

Gauze

Scissors

Safety pins

Bandages

Latex gloves

CPR mouth piece

Plasters

Tweezers

Thermometer

Antihistamine Cream

Your first aid kit should also include information on CPR, the Heimlich Manoeuvre and emergency telephone numbers.

6. Inside and Out

The garden and surrounding areas of your home are potentially riddled with hazards. In your garage or garden shed, make sure that all flammable liquids and gasses are properly sealed and stored away. Oil spills or leaky canisters can have disastrous effects with the smallest of spark or flame.

If you´ve got children or pets, the use of a pool cover and a fence around the perimeter are a good idea to secure loved ones.

Home safety is an essential part of life as we know it. The old adage is true – it really is better to be safe than sorry.

FOLLOWING the release of crime statistics last week, it has emerged that the highest murder rates occurred in three provinces.

Western Cape, Free State and North West accounted for 4018 of the 15940 murders in the country. This means the three provinces recorded an increase of 4,2percent, 8,6percent, and 7,9percent respectively.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said during the 1994-1995 period the murder ratio stood at 27000.

The Western Cape is the only province that recorded an increase in attempted murder category with 29,8percent – 2162 as compared to 1707 in the 2009-2010 financial year.

Mpumalanga recorded the highest drop with 33,2percent followed by Gauteng at 19,5percent.

KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Eastern Cape recorded a decrease of 16,7percent, 13,7percent and 12,7percent respectively.

North West dropped by 9,5percent while Free State went down by 6,2percent and Northern Cape by 5,2percent.

The country’s overall drop in this category is 12,2percent compared to 6,1percent in the past financial year.

Mthethwa said though sex offences had gone down by 3,1percent, the number of reported rapes had risen from 55097 to 56272.

Free State recorded an 8,6percent increase in the category, followed by North West with 6,6percent and then Northern Cape with 5,2percent. Eastern Cape went up by 2,2percent.

SECURE PARKING AT NIGHT ?

Should this be your right?

Most people live in complexes and this in most instances is not an option, never mind a right.

Most thefts are carried out at night from complexes or flats despite numerous security measures such as automatic gates or guards and criminals regularly breach the vehicle’s own security system.

You may ask “How can I secure my vehicle in these circumstances?”

Well for less than the cost of your insurance excess should you have your vehicle stolen, you can now provide individual protection for your car as a once off payment from R 2200 and have the revolutionary CARSTOP fitted in your parking space. To breach the system the thief would need to use a surface grinder or a jack hammer which is highly unlikely.

The Carstop parking post consists of two channel shaped arms hinged by a 20 mm axle at the extremities of a tray. The tray is concreted into the ground, increasing the integrity of the unit and making the mounting tamperproof. The device is activated by lifting both arms and locking them together at the top with an integral, encapsulated push lock that is secure and tamperproof. The A-frame thus formed creates the best possible vehicle barrier. When the car is reversed against the unit the bumper rides up the A-frame reducing pressure off the wheels until the tyres lose traction and spin, immobilising the vehicle. All this time the force and weight of the vehicle is directed into the concrete base, exerting minimal force on the axles of the Carstop. The heavier the vehicle, the stronger the unit becomes.

Installation is quick and easy. The depth of the excavation is a mere 250 mm, well away from all services and is neat and tidy. There is a down locking facility in the standard unit. Carstop can also be ordered with a disc type lock. A surface mounted model is available for suspended floors and its height has been reduced to just over 60 mm to accommodate low vehicles.

The patent holders and manufacturers of Carstop are Razor-Spike International, which pioneered and made a name for itself with Razor Spike anticlimb wall and perimeter spikes in both the local and overseas markets.

A range of portable wheel clamps is also available. These products provide visual, physical protection to vehicles and trailers.

Security Focus Magazine
Smit Report: Perimeter security and detection
September 2007

Bryan Mincher, is the owner and manager of Razor-Spike International, a South African pioneering company that specializes in the manufacture and installation of patented Razor-Spike anti-climb wall spikes. Says Mr Mincher: “With crime levels soaring to unacceptable levels in South Africa today, weaknesses in perimeter security mean that it is just a matter of time before an incident occurs. The ideal situation is to deter intruders from attempting to breach the perimeter. If the perimeter is not secure and allows intruders to gain access to a property easily, the chance of incident is very high.”

Demand for Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) is coming from all sectors, from residential and business premises to parastatal and industrial. This, he says, is evidenced by unrelenting demand for installations in prisons, government premises, foreign consulates, the defense force, townhouse complexes, security complexes, schools and domestic properties.

For Mr Mincher, anti-climb wall spikes, razor wire, electric fences and beams feature at the top of the list of priority deterrents in a system that should include the highest possible physical barriers. “Walls should be at least 2,4m in height since perimeter security becomes less effective when it is at a height where it can be easily tampered with and neutralized. A product installed on a wall of this height is a lot more effective than one on a 1,8m wall. To this, a physical deterrent in the form of Razor-Spike should be fitted to the wall to prevent access to the top of the wall. We believe that if you can’t get on to the wall, then you can’t get over it.”

He adds: “The need to have a dangerous physical barrier such as Razor-Spike installed on a perimeter structure as a first line of defense has become an absolute necessity with the increase in crime. In addition, we are finding that combinations of other products such as electric fencing and beams are becoming essential as secondary lines of defense. The more barriers a potential intruder has to neutralize, the less chance there is of the perimeter being breached. And the problem of rising crime levels is not confined to South Africa – we’re exporting our products worldwide and our export volumes are growing each year as crime increases globally.”

In Mr Mincher’s opinion, South Africa’s current crime statistics are not a true reflection of what’s really happening in the country. “Crime here is without a doubt on the increase and especially rife within the domestic sector,” he says. “Clients now have to protect their properties with a combination of products in order to stop intruders breaching their perimeter security. Townhouse complexes have been hard hit by crime and are no longer the safe havens that they are marketed to be. We advise clients to secure their units within their complexes with products such as Razor-Spike so as to better protect themselves.”

While electrified fencing occupies an important position in today’s perimeter security systems, it is far from being fail-safe and intruder resistant, he continues. Electric fences are fine as a back-up to physical deterrents such as wall spikes, in his opinion. However, they are not enough on their own to stop someone breaching a perimeter. The answer is for electric fences to be connected to alarm systems or armed response companies to be effective. “We are finding that there is growing demand for properties with electric fences to have Razor-Spike fitted underneath the fences. This is to deny access to the top of the wall and is especially true of townhouse complexes to the point where our advice to consumers is to fit electric fences only once proper anti-climb spikes are fitted to the wall.”
